A good llms.txt is not marketing copy but a precise data sheet for machines. It follows a simple Markdown structure — here is the layout AI systems reliably understand.
The basic structure
# Company name\n> One-sentence summary of what you do and for whom. ## Overview - Short description in 2–4 sentences. ## Key facts - Category: … - Location: … - Audience: … ## Products & services - [Product A](https://…): short description ## Optional - [Full version](llms-full.txt)
The most common mistakes
- Advertising language instead of facts. “Market-leading & innovative” tells an AI nothing. “Italian restaurant in Bochum, vegan-friendly” does.
- No entities. Without category, location and a concrete offering, the anchor for recommendations is missing.
- Dead or relative links without a domain. AI systems need absolute, reachable URLs.
- Outdated. Prices, opening hours, offering — whatever is wrong gets cited wrong.
Examples by industry
Restaurant / local business
Focus on location, cuisine, specialties (vegan, gluten-free), opening hours and reservations. This lets AI assistants answer “Where can I eat good Y in X?”.
SaaS / software
Focus on problem, audience, core features, integrations and pricing model. This gets you named for “Which tool does Z?”.
Local service provider
Focus on service, catchment area, qualifications and contact. Ideal for “I need an X near Y”.
You do not have to write this by hand: the llms.txt generator automatically creates both files from your website — and the optional AI optimization strips out menu and cookie clutter.
